RAI Sub-T lab partners with UOULU to start 6G testing for advanced robotics

In the last months, the RAI group secured funding to install a private 5G Advanced network in its subterrenean laboratory in collaboration with Telia and Ericsson. Besides the state of the art 5G network, RAI is also collaborating with University of Oulu within the Sunrise-6G project, with the aim to define the requirements for the newer 6G cellular networks to enable complex robotics applications for the future of autonomous mining operations.

In the first weeks of September 2024, the SUNRISE-6G project partner, the University of Oulu (UOULU), conducted preliminary experimental radio measurements in the Sub-Terranean laboratory of the Robotics and AI (RAI) group at Luleå University of Technology (LTU). Back in late August, the Centre for Distance-Spanning Technology (CDT) of LTU, together with the RAI group, successfully obtained a radio license from the Swedish Post and Telecom (PST) authority to use part of the available radio spectrum for research purposes related to future 6G networks (Press Release: Link). This permitted UOULU to bring the preliminary equipment into the RAI Sub-Terranean laboratory, thus allowing UOULU and LTU to begin the active phase of the SUNRISE-6G project, as initially planned during the previous meeting in April.
