Sina Sharif Mansouri, Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering, has been awarded the 2020 Prize for the best Doctoral dissertation at Luleå University of Technology by Vattenfall.

"I am extremely honored to receive Vattenfall's award. I am earnestly grateful for the recognition I have received for my hard work. I am thankful for the people who helped me in the journey to achieve my degree and receive this award", Sina Sharif Mansouri says.

Application of automated field robotics

Sina Sharif Mansouri's doctoral dissertation consists of a solid theoretical contribution in the area of autonomous field robotics, contributing with a whole novel set of theories that are advancing the foundations of robotics in enabling fully autonomous operation in unstructured, unknown and harsh environments, typical environments that simulate the conditions in for example the mining industry or environments for space exploration in other planets.

Pushes the boundaries of autonomous field robotics

Sina’s thesis is a monograph on addressing the problems of control, navigation, and path planning for Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs). The thesis specifically targets applications of automated inspection of subterranean areas and infrastructure in unknown harsh environments. Through the theoretical work in the thesis, Sina’s work has contributed to pushing to the boundaries of autonomous field robotics, enabling unmanned inspection in for example the mining industry and in other high-risk environments.

"Through hisresearch, Sina Sharif Mansouri has contributed to pushing to the boundaries of autonomous field robotics, enabling unmanned inspection in for example the mining industry and in other high-risk environments. We are very happy and proud to award Vattenfall's prize for best doctoral dissertation at Luleå University of Technology to Sina", Tord Eriksson says, supply CEO at Vattenfall vattenkraft.

Published articles

The thesis is based on 15 published papers, of which 6 have been published in high-ranking scientific journals and the rest in top-tier conferences of the field. The papers have already been cited more than 350 times, further showing the impact within the robotics and control engineering community.

The price will be awarded at the Academic Ceremony on 14 May.
