Sub-Terranean Laboratory

The Robotics and AI (RAI) group at Luleå University proudly operates a unique underground laboratory, the Sub-T Lab, located near the university. This one-of-a-kind facility features over 600 meters of tunnels with diverse shapes, sizes, and surface textures. Its proximity to the university combined with the absence of active mining operations, creates an ideal environment for conducting experimental evaluations on cutting-edge mining-related technologies. Research applications span autonomous robotics, Industrial IoT, space robotics, and advanced underground wireless network solutions.

The Sub-T Lab is outfitted with a high-throughput Wi-Fi 6 network, delivering reliable coverage and internet access throughout most of the tunnels. Additionally, a private 5G Standalone (SA) network installation is underway, which will soon enable high-speed communications,  positioning capabilities, and edge computing capabilities across almost all tunnel areas.

The tunnels offer varied environmental conditions, such as high humidity, icy surfaces, dust, and occasional water drips—perfect for testing and validating research in fields ranging from underground mining to space exploration.

To expand its collaborative research efforts, the RAI group invites external partners to leverage this exceptional facility. Contact us for more information on partnership opportunities.
